The people on the cover are Clorinda Manchego de Valdez and her husband Ramon Valdez. She was the
daughter of Tranquilino Manchego and Carlota Cordova de Manchego. She was the granddaughter of Florencio
Manchego and Elena Gonzales de Manchego and Nemecia Cordova de Cordova and Jose Cordova. Clorinda was
born in Garcia, Colorado, in 1915. She attended Adams State College in the mid-1930's. She died a short time
later of Tuberculosis. Ramon, was from Alamosa and the brother of Dr. Caniel Valdez, who was the publisher of
La Luz, a newspaper published in Denver in the 1960's and 1970's. This picture represents a typical home in the

Mystery Cover Photo
Somewhere in rural New Mexico or Colorado a group of seven gathered to have their picture taken with
a shorn sheep. They even brought out two mismatched chairs so that the sheep would have firm footing
and no one would have to kneel. The photo has been reproduced: the reverse side is a postcard. But the
photograph does not completly cover one side and written in faint pencil is: "Cousin Paul's nephew, niece
Carmelita Gomez, and Maclovia, aunt to Domitila." On the left is a ladder: in the distance is the faint
outline of a mountain range. The building is of adobe: an electric line is connected from the building to
one of the posts: a grinding stone(?) leans against that same post. Photo courtesy of Donie Nelson:

Mystery Cover Photo
Written on the back of this picture is: Mrs. R.[G or S--cannot read this initial] Beach and husband of
Canon CLity, CLolorado. Along the side of the picture is written: Philander Kit Carson 11. Mrs Beach is 18
years old and is the daughter of Kit Carson. Jr., of La Junta, Colorado, and grand-daughter of the famous
Kit Carson Sr. "I presented the matrimony with the veiling" is also written on the back. What does this
mean? The Colorado Historical Society has not replied to my questions about how this picture was
obtained and who wrote the information. If this is Mrs. Beach, the picture is incorrectly identified. Robert
M. Beach married Abelina Madril/Madrid 2 April 1863. She is the daughter of Antonio Madril and Juanita
Lopez. He was the son of Charles W. Beach and Maria Mascarenas. Photo source: Microfilm 017040 NM
