Cover Photograph:
This distinguished gentleman has protruding light eyes and a receding hairline. Do you know who he is? His
mustache is untrimmed, and he has a slight cleft in his chin. His suit coat and vest are well fitted, possibly of
worsted wool. His distinctive, wide tie has a pattern of alternating checks of solid color and small stripes. His
white shirt collar is tucked under the jacket lapels. When I was a child, he reminded me of movie comedians
who appeared with the Keystone Cops, and I secretly hoped we were not related. This cabinet card was
produced by a photographer whose signature is now illegible (kei...). (Photo courtesy of Donie Nelson, 10736

<Cover Photograph:
This handsome couple is posed for a formal, possibly important ocasion. Do you recognize them? The woman has a full
head of wavy dark hair which is swept up to the top of her head in a rich coil. Her eyes are bright with naturally arched
eyebrows, her lips are full, and her jutting chin is marked by a cleft; she has a short neck. She wears drop earrings, possibly
on gold wires, which hang from her large, pierced earlobes. Attaached to the high-necked silk collar of her blouse is an
intricate pin composed of two side-by-side flowers and their leaves, each punctuated with a pearl center. A lariat-like chain
follows the edge of the collar; a fob connects the two parts of the chain. A collarless jacket with sequin trin and
mutton-leg sleeves complete her outfit. The man has noticeably wavy hair, sideburns, and a full, trimmed mustache. His
high stiff collar can barely be seen. He wears a fashionable double-breasted jacket and a two-toned tie. The suit's collar is
finished with wide stitching. This oval photo has been blued to a black cardboard card, which is embossed with two ovals
framing the photo; a pebble pattern stretches to the edges. Embossed in the lower right-hand section, barely legible in the
pebble pattern, is the photographer's identity: Leon Williams, 277 W. Union Aave., Pueblo, Colorado. (Photo courtesy of
Donie Nelson, 10736 Jefferson Blvd., #690, Culver City, CA 90230-4969, (310)204-6808, photo dode: RX-23).

Cover Photograph:
It's a chilly winter day in California, sometime in the fall of 1922 or early in 1923. Four sisters, California
natives, gather around a toddler in a knitted cap and warm sweater. All share a unique ancestry. They are the
3rd gr-granddaughters of Revolutionary war hero, Robert Young (Battle of Kings Mountain), the gr-
granddaughters of the Taos mountain man Ewing Young, and grandaughters of Joaquin Young and Ma.
Josefa Moya, early settlers of Trinidad, Colorado. Left-right: Mary Frances Verdugo Johnson (1900-1977),
Linda Elizabeth Verdugo Oliver (1898-1972) holding Adeline Oliver (1921-),Pearl Sophie Bostick Dernberger
(1893-1979), and Flora Balestero Bird (1886-1968). Not identified is a fifth female whose forehead and bangs
peek above baby Adeline: also visible is a man in a cap. The woman may be another sister (there were seven).
The man may be Adelin's father, Harry J.C. Oliver (1894-1967), or one of two brothers of the sisters: Richard
Frank Verdugo (1896-1935) a native of CLolton, CA. Francisca's nine children carry the following surnames: Araiza,
Balestero, Bostick, and Verdugo. The husbands may come and go, but Grancisca's children stayed near. This
family has accumulated a huge photograph collection, many are of multi-generational subjects. In this photo
Mary is wearing a blouse under a ribbed sweater. Linda's knitted dress is topped by a brimmed hat. Pearl's
coat has a shawl collaar, and her hat is trimmed with feathers. Flora, who owned the Spanish Kitchen restaurant
in downtown Los Angeles, is snug in a fur coat and curved brim hat [photo courtesy of Irene Dernberger
Magnone, daughter of Pearl Bostick Dernberger, via Donie Nelson].
